TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Kid Fit Arcade (aka The Fit Arcade) opened in Orlando, Florida during Fall 2006. Its mission: To encourage fun physical activity through the use of interactive fitness video games. The interactive aspect of the video games used at the center forced children to move their bodies in order to generate activity on the video screen and further the game.
The brainchild of Danica Smith and Lauri Nelson, Kid Fit Arcade’s unique approach to fitness received both local and national news coverage. Four components set this program apart from other fitness centers. In addition to interactive video games, there was specialized fitness equipment for kids, educational support and tutoring. Among the obvious benefits of the Kid Fit Arcade program were weight loss, improved health and increased self-esteem. Many children also started receiving better grades in school and experienced fewer disciplinary problems from mentoring they received at the center.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Kid Fit Arcade program was watching the children teach their parents about healthy eating and making better choices.
Inclusion was taken very seriously at Kid Fit Arcade. High functioning autistic children were integrated into the program with great results. One medical professional noted major improvement in one child who attended the gym and another child’s doctor wanted to know what had changed in the child’s life because of the drastic change in his behavior. The message sent to The Fit Arcade team was, “Keep doing what you are doing because improvements are being made.”
Fit Camp was a hugely successful summer camp program based on the foundation laid by Kid Fit Arcade. This camp blended a mixture of activities. Nutrition was taught using simple recipes and fun lectures. Standard exercises like jumping jacks, push-ups and various sports were interwoven with interactive games and dancing. Field trips and other activities provided experiences parents could not otherwise afford to give many of the children.
Kid Fit Arcade is now closed, but Danica and Lauri have drawn on experiences and memories from those days to create a screenplay entitled Fit Arcade Gone Wild. Through the lens of comedy, their story shows that anything is possible if you are dedicated to serving others and rely on God to help you through – even if the results aren’t quite what you had planned!

Childhood obesity is killing our kids!
One out of every three children is overweight or obese. That figure represents a 200% increase for children and a 400% increase for adolescents over the last 30 years.
The obesity epidemic is real and must be fought much like we fight other diseases like cancer. Fortunately, the most common contributing factors have been identified and are controllable: poor eating habits and a lack of physical activity. Modern lifestyles have accentuated the actions that result in obesity: Super-sized meals on the go, television watching, and video game activities are creating the first generation of kids who may not outlive their parents.
But what if we could harness the thrill of what traditionally has been a sedentary activity and transform it into a physical activity? What if we could let kids do what they love to do…while exercising and getting fit?
Executives of the Fit Arcade – a health focused, interactive fitness center and camp for kids – began a journey to educate kids on making healthy choices and helping reverse the obesity epidemic. Part of the mission includes spreading the word in a fun way that kids can relate to and get excited about. Much like that new jingle for a hot new snack – we realize that media and entertainment can influence the choices kids make and provide support for parents who are attempting to raise healthy kids.
In order to spread the word, we created a feature film titled Fit Arcade Gone Wild. In the film, kids learn how to make healthy eating choices and work out with machines that combine today’s popular video games with exercise equipment. The social message is clear, but delivered in a fun and entertaining medium that will have staying power with kids and families.
We are working hard to start production of the film during the summer of 2015. We are seeking partners who support our mission and understand the value of influencing decision making through media to fight this very important fight against childhood obesity.
